How do I calculate how much brick I need?

Calculating the amount of brick you need involves a simple formula that considers the dimensions of the wall or structure you’re building, the size of the bricks, and any joint allowances. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to calculate the number of bricks you need:

  1. Measure the Wall Dimensions: Measure the length and height of the wall in meters. Make sure to account for any openings such as doors and windows.
  2. Determine the Brick Size: Identify the dimensions of the bricks you intend to use. In the UK, a standard brick size is usually 215mm (length) x 102.5mm (height) x 65mm (depth).
  3. Account for Joint Allowance: Since bricks are laid with mortar joints between them, you need to include the joint thickness in your calculations. A common joint thickness is around 10mm (0.01 meters).
  4. Calculate the Number of Rows: Divide the wall height by the combined height of a brick and the joint thickness. This gives you the number of rows of bricks.Number of Rows = Wall Height / (Brick Height + Joint Thickness)
  5. Calculate the Number of Bricks in a Row: Divide the wall length by the combined length of a brick and the joint thickness. This gives you the number of bricks in a single row.Number of Bricks in a Row = Wall Length / (Brick Length + Joint Thickness)
  6. Calculate Total Bricks: Multiply the number of rows by the number of bricks in a row to get the total number of bricks needed for that section of the wall.Total Bricks = Number of Rows x Number of Bricks in a Row
  7. Repeat for Additional Sections: If your wall has different sections with different dimensions, repeat the calculation for each section and then add up the total number of bricks needed.
  8. Consider Wastage: It’s a good idea to account for some extra bricks to cover wastage, cutting, and any mistakes during construction. A common rule of thumb is to add around 5-10% to your calculated total.
  9. Final Calculation: Add up the total number of bricks needed for all sections and add the wastage percentage to get your final estimate.

Remember, this calculation provides an estimate. Actual usage might vary due to factors like the accuracy of your measurements, variations in brick sizes, and how efficiently the bricks are laid.
